In an odd coincidence, the House debate on Saturday to overhaul health care took place on the third anniversary of the 2006 election that gave Democrats majority control after 12 years of Republican dominance. It fell to President Obama and to Congressional leaders to persuade those Democrats still sweating the final vote that it would not prove the party’s undoing in next November’s midterm elections.

Both Mr. Obama and the House leaders showcased Democrats’ newest colleague, Representative Bill Owens, who last Tuesday won a special election in an upstate New York district that Republicans had held since 1872. In the campaign, Mr. Owens gave unabashed support to the pending House health care bill, despite the opposition of national conservative groups, including the new Tea Party Patriots, who backed Mr. Owens’s conservative rival.

Mr. Obama, during his private pep talk to Democrats, recognized Mr. Owens’s election and then posed a question to the other lawmakers. According to Representative Earl Blumenauer of Oregon, who supports the health care bill, the president asked, “Does anybody think that the teabag, anti-government people are going to support them if they bring down health care? All it will do is confuse and dispirit” Democratic voters “and it will encourage the extremists.”

Another freshman Democrat from New Mexico, Representative Martin Heinrich, said the president’s comments overall were reassuring. “If you want to see a recipe for failure,” Mr. Heinrich said, “don’t do the things you talked about in your campaigns and turn your back on your base. All the independent voters in the world don’t matter if the Democrats don’t turn out.”

“This is an opportunity to do something as big as Social Security,” he added. “And me, personally, I don’t want to be on the wrong side of history.”

I love it. If you oppose Obama, you are an extremist. The way the left throws these words around (racist, extremist, dangerous, etc.) its almost becoming a badge of honor.

I am so glad O-bongo the Clown was going to change the culture of Washington and politics as usual, and bring people together and throw down some healing on the political divide. Geez, how come us Tea baggers can't get one of those Beer Summits with him?

Can 2012 come soon enough? And more importantly, can someone credible be found to oppose this tool?

And another thing. Am I the only one that finds it a bit unseemly that our president is so comfortable using the colloquialism "teabaggers" when referring to those that oppose him? Would it not be enough to just refer to the "tea party movement"?

I guess it has to do with his pure devotion to the Alinsky rules.

The Tea Party shit is maybe the biggest waste of time there could be. An easy way to feel good about yourself while not actually doing anything to make a real difference. These same people will vote for the next rightie tard and the country will continue it's spiral down the drain.

This is the most partisan President perhaps of all-time. Everyone who disagrees with their administration with anything, even though they are usually in the majority, is an extremist.

Please, bro, if you can't see the connection, then I guess I will have to spell it out for you.

How did the Tea Bag movement come about? It was simply that average Americans, from all economic spectrums, but mostly working class, had finally had enough from their leaders in Washington and finally decided to do something about it. Their anger was started by the Bush Bailouts, fanned higher by the Obongo $800 B Stimulus pig plan, and then brought to a white hot burn by adding a new health care initiative proposal with unlimited spending and upheaval on top of all of that. Folks have had enough with over the top spending coming from Washington, a Washington that is increasingly out of touch and not caring about the very people its supposed to represent.

For that, for folks being PO'ed enough to get up off their duffs and organize and try and make their voices heard, they were initially labeled by those on the left as kooks, racists, armed and dangerous, motivated by a sinister undercurrent of inability to deal with a non-White President.

Now, anyone who opposes the healthcare debacle, I mean, "plan", is being equated to an "extremist". Do you not see this?

Let me ask you, what, exactly, has the Tea Bag movement done that makes it qualify as "extreme"? I am not talking about the odd protester that may have a sign in bad taste, because no one can control every person in a given movement, but rather, what grandiose, sweeping statements or positions or platforms or actions have been taken by the Tea Bag movement and its members other then voicing their displeasure at team Obongo and his Clown Troop in Washington? What qualifies as "extreme"? Please cite for me examples of extreme behavior, extreme rhetoric, extreme positions that define the movement and opposition as per the leadership or key figures of the movement.

And for this, the very action you lefties said was your patriotic duty during the Bush years, organized rallies now rises to the level of "extremism"? In other words, under the Maobama regime, anyone not towing his company line is an "extremist". Do you not see the danger in a demagogue like this and the arrogance of his position? I guess you don't, you're a lefty and will rationalize it away, but the fact is that no matter how you slice it, if you start to draw that line that ANY opposition to the master plan is now considered extremism in concept and demonized, it makes it very hard for a democracy to work, now doesn't it?

Please explain why teabag party members are extremists? Because they want a smaller government? To me, an extremist is someone who fits in the 10% at either end of the spectrum. Way more than 10% of people want smaller government, so please explain what makes Tea Party people extremists....And don't say pro-life or traditional marriage people are extremists...they are in the majority.
